“Wherever we are, what we hear is mostly noise. When we ignore it, it disturbs us. When we listen to it, we find it fascinating.”//–/John Cage, 1937
Noise is a thing, a genre of music with roots in early 20th Century classical music, aleatoric experiments, primitive electronic music, free jazz from the 60’s. Noise rock bands flourish to this day. Many people relate to noise as what they hear in some movie soundtracks.
I like noise. You will too if you abandon the notion that noise is bad.
Pay attention to the details in the sounds, the dramatic gestures, the shifting layers, the intricate evolving timbres. Surrender to the visuals the sound evokes—moonscapes, machines, mythical creatures—and make up your own screenplay to match the music.
